what is yoga?

Yoga is More Than Poses – Here’s What No One Tells You!

Most people think they know what yoga is—picture someone twisted into a pretzel-like pose, balancing on one foot, or flowing gracefully through a series of stretches. But when I have conversations with people, I often hear: “I really don’t know what yoga is.” “I can’t do yoga.” or even a blanket “I don’t do yoga.”

And I get it! Most assume yoga is just about movement, but it’s actually a complete system for living a healthier, more balanced, and more intentional life.

Yoga is made up of 8 limbs, like branches of a tree, each supporting the others. Most people focus only on one—asana (the physical postures)—but those poses are just one small piece of a much bigger picture.

Let’s break it down.

The 8 Limbs of Yoga – A Roadmap to Balance

1. Yamas (How We Treat Others)

This is the foundation of ethical living—practicing kindness, honesty, non-violence, and integrity. It’s about how we show up in the world and how we interact with others.

2. Niyamas (How We Care for Ourselves)

These are the inner practices—self-discipline, cleanliness (inside and out), contentment, self-reflection, and surrender. This limb teaches us to nurture our own well-being.

3. Asana (The Yoga Poses)

The physical practice we all know. But the original purpose of asana wasn’t just fitness—it was to prepare the body to sit in stillness for meditation and breathwork without discomfort.

4. Pranayama (Breath Control)

Breath is energy. Learning to control it can calm the nervous system, boost focus, and enhance physical and emotional well-being.

5. Pratyahara (Turning Inward)

The practice of quieting distractions—turning down the noise of the outside world so we can better connect with ourselves.

6. Dharana (Concentration)

A focused mind is a powerful mind. Dharana is about training ourselves to concentrate fully—whether in meditation, work, or daily life.

7. Dhyana (Meditation)

This is the deep, uninterrupted flow of awareness—moving beyond distraction into a state of inner stillness and connection.

8. Samadhi (Ultimate Bliss & Connection)

The goal of all yoga practices—feeling completely at peace, connected, and in flow with life. It’s that rare, effortless state where everything just clicks.

So, How Do the Poses (Asana) Fit In?

Yoga postures aren’t the goal—they’re a tool. They prepare the body for deeper practices by:

Building strength and flexibility, so sitting in meditation isn’t uncomfortable.
Releasing stored tension and stuck energy, allowing for greater mental clarity.
Training patience and focus, which support all other aspects of life.

The poses move energy through the body, helping us feel lighter, clearer, and more in tune with ourselves. But they are just one doorway into the vast world of yoga.

Yoga Isn’t Just on the Mat—It’s a Way of Life

If you’ve ever practiced kindness, taken a deep breath to calm yourself, or focused completely on something you love, guess what? You’re already practicing yoga.

So the next time someone says, “I don’t really know what yoga is,” you can smile and say:

“It’s not just about poses—it’s about how you live, breathe, and connect.”
