Healthy Cruising: Shipshape Bodies
Hey, friend! I’m guessing if you are reading this, you are like me, and are drawn to the freedom and adventure that comes with life on the water (or the open road). I’ve spent a few years living aboard my sailboat, running charters, and exploring new horizons, both at sea and in an RV on land, and let me tell you—it was equal parts magical and challenging. These days, I’m living back on land in Idaho to be close to my grands, but my heart still dreams of salty air and distant shores. There is nothing like waking up, making a cup of tea or coffee and then looking out the window, or climbing into the cockpit just to remember where you are!
One of the biggest lessons I learned while living on my boat is that maintaining my body is just as important as maintaining my vessel. Trust me, I didn’t always get it right. During my years running charters, and even living at the dock and teaching yoga full time, schedules predicted by weather, meals dictated by what was in the tienda that day and way too many meals of processed food—especially during my time with the Boy Scouts. Those were fun times, but they took a toll on my energy and health. It wasn’t until I started prioritizing my well-being that I truly felt like I could thrive in this lifestyle.
Just like a boat needs regular care to prevent leaks and rust, our bodies need consistent upkeep to perform their best. When Bob Bitchin asked me to write for his monthly newsletter, I jumped at the chance to start my “Healthy Cruising” column back up. Whether you’re adventuring by sea or RV, I’ll share what I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) about staying vibrant and energized on the go. Each month, I’ll bring you practical tips, personal stories, and my favorite tools to help you keep your body—and your mind—running as smoothly as a well-oiled engine.
Here’s what you can look forward to:
- Gut Health: Ever been stuck at anchor with a finicky engine? That’s your gut when you’re eating junk. I’ll show you how to keep your digestive system humming, even in a tiny galley.
- Yoga & Movement: Let’s face it, whether you’re navigating tight engine rooms or small RV spaces, flexibility is your best friend. I’ll share simple yoga flows and exercises perfect for life on the go.
- Essential Oils: From calming seasickness to repelling mosquitoes, oils are like the Swiss Army knife of natural health. I’ll share the ones I never leave the dock without.
- Meditation & Mindset: Some days, you’re gliding through glassy waters. Other days, it’s all whitecaps and chaos. A little mindfulness can help you weather any storm.
- Bioavailable Supplements: Just like your engine needs clean fuel, your body thrives on the good stuff. We’ll dive into why quality matters and how to keep your energy reserves topped off.
- Consistency: The secret sauce. You don’t maintain your boat once and call it good, right? Same goes for your health. I’ll share how small daily habits can lead to long-term vitality.
When I think back to my early live aboard days, I wish someone had handed me a guide like this. I was so focused on provisioning, navigation, and fixing the latest thing that broke that I didn’t realize I was neglecting myself. But here’s the good news: it’s never too late to start making little changes that make a big difference.
So, let’s embark on this journey together. Think of me as your wellness first mate—here to share what I’ve learned to help you stay healthy, happy, and ready for whatever adventures come your way. And please take advantage of my weekly blog that focuses on health and wellness in general!
Until next month, keep your hulls clean, your sails full, and your body shipshape!
With love and smooth sailing,
Kim
